Paolo Papparotto

Began working with puppets in 1979. Since 1982, he has specialised in the traditional puppets of the Veneto area (Harlequin, Pantalone, etc) and in the Commedia dell’Arte in the Puppet Theatre as a soloist puppeteer. In his in-depth studies of the historical theatrical qualities of the characters – and with a particular fancy for Harlequin, who he interprets faithfully - he recaptures, and in some ways, reinvents, the ancient Veneto puppetry tradition. Even today, all the performances that he gives include the traditional principal players from the Commedia dell’Arte.
In 1983, he founded the Centro di Ricerca sul Teatro di Figure (CRTF) – the Research Centre on Figurative Theatre - , whose purpose is to collect historic and documentary material on puppeteers in the Treviso and Veneto areas. As part of the CRTF, he participated in shows with stuffed puppets, giant puppets, mechanical puppets, and non-traditional puppets, while continuing to cultivate his activity as a soloist.
In 1989, Paolo won the “Città di Cervia” National Competition for soloist puppeteers at the “Arrivano dal Mare” Festival. In 1992, he was involved the international group, Euromarionettes, participating with his Harlequin character, the same puppet with which he later participated in the international UNIMA festival in Lubjiana. In 1994, he gave life to the new puppet, Arturo, a puppet created for a locally broadcast television programme. In 1996, Papparotto founded the “La casa di Arlecchino”, an association for puppeteers and enthusiasts of the Puppet Theatre, which led to the opening of the School for Puppet Theatre in Ponzano (TV), where he is the director.

Other prizes:Campogalliani d'oro (best Italian Puppeteers of 2002); Marionetta d'oro (Valli del Natisone festival 2005).
